"On the 14th November 2011, the first seawater desalination plant has been opened on Zanzibar. The plant is self-sufficient as it uses 100% renewable energy. It generates up to 100 liter per hour which covers the drinking supply of 500 people per day. This plant is especially designed for rureal areas on Zanzibar where a waterpipe network is too costly and maintenance would be intensive. The plant has been financed as a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project: 183,000 Euro from the company Moerk, 177,000 Euro from the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany, and 50,000 Euro from the project partner Dow Chemicals. Local partners are the NGO Pamoja Zanzibar, the Karume Institute for Science&Technoloy.and ZAWA."
