The church was built by German missionaries in 1900/01. The famous German missionary Bruno Guthmann worked here from 1910 to 1936. Being one of the oldest buildings around Kilimanjaro the historic church building provides unique evidence of German history in Tanzania. However, the building is in desperate need of refurbishment. In order to preserve this great piece of German-Tanzanian history the German Government grants an allocation of 20.000 Euros to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania. Another 30.000 Euros are provided by the Mission Center Leipzig. After refurbishment the church will be used as a museum, a kindergarten and a hall of meeting.
